How a bi-weekly cheque is worked out
Payroll divides your yearly salary into 26 cheques and withholds tax on each as if every cheque were the same all year. CPP and EI stop once you reach the yearly maximum, so cheques late in the year can be larger for higher earners.
Some years have 27 pay days
Fifty-two weeks plus one or two extra days means a bi-weekly schedule occasionally fits 27 pay days into a calendar year. If your employer keeps the same cheque size, that year pays one extra cheque.
